Sam Memorial Nursing Scholarship
The Sam Memorial Nursing Scholarship honours Sam’s legacy of compassionate care and connection to rural Alberta by supporting fourth-year nursing students who are passionate about pursuing a career in rural nursing.
The scholarship provides up to $5,000 annually to support students preparing to make a difference in rural healthcare communities across Alberta.
Recipients are selected at the discretion of the selection committee. One, multiple, or no scholarships may be awarded in a given year. If one recipient is selected, they will receive the full $5,000. If multiple recipients are selected, the $5,000 will be divided equally among them.
About Sam
Sam was born and raised in the Peace Country of Northern Alberta. She grew up on her family ranch and, from an early age, learned what it meant to care for something beyond herself — tending to the land and the animals she raised. These values stayed with her and shaped the life she would later build.
Sam graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing from Mount Royal University in Calgary in 2023. Her intelligence and determination could have taken her anywhere, but she chose to return home, believing that real change often happens where your roots are. She understood the inevitable truths of rural healthcare — fewer hands, limited resources, and the unending need to give more than you have. Instead of being discouraged, she saw this as a challenge worth taking on.
Her efforts were just the beginning of what she hoped to build. And while she’s no longer here to continue that work, what she stood for still remains, and the way she made people feel will never be forgotten.
This scholarship will carry forward her legacy by supporting new graduate nurses who share her passion for improving rural healthcare in Alberta.
Sam believed that where you live should not determine the quality of care you receive. Her story shows that one person, guided by values and fueled by passion, can change lives.
Eligibility Criteria
The scholarship is available to fourth-year students currently enrolled in a recognized nursing program.
To be considered, applicants must intend to pursue rural nursing in Alberta upon graduation.
Applicants should demonstrate their passion for rural healthcare and their commitment to serving rural communities.
Scholarship Award
Award Amount: Up to $5,000
There will be one, multiple, or no scholarship recipients in a given year, at the discretion of the selection committee.

Application Requirements
Applicants must complete the Sam Memorial Nursing Scholarship Application.
The application includes questions about:
Why you chose nursing.
What area of nursing interests you.
Your connection to rural Alberta.
Applicants must also provide two references and academic transcripts as supporting documentation.
